Diego Gomes was only 13 years old when his dream of pursuing a musical career suddenly became a reality, winning hearts week after week, and inevitably claiming victory on Season 3 of YTV’s The Next Star. The contest earned Diego an impressive and incredibly dedicated legion of fans, “The Diegonators,” who have supported him relentlessly. They were responsible for voting him through the ranks of TNS and generating the powerful social media presence that has served as Diego’s creative outlet since his graduation from the contest. In addition to the support of his fans, Diego’s family and friends have been catalysts in his success, showering him with endless amounts of support surrounding his music and inspiring his hard work and dedication.
The life changing experience of The Next Star afforded Diego an opportunity to develop his songwriting craft with highly respected musicians, writers and producers. His debut single “My Best Friend’s Girl“, co-written with Ryan Stewart (Carly Rae Jepsen, Owl City), reached #10 on Billboard Canada’s Emerging Artists Chart and the video has reached over half a million views on YouTube. As the winner of The Next Star, Diego released two more singles; “Tonight We’re On Fire” also co-written with Stewart, and “Call My Name” co-written with Zubin Thakkar (Prize Fighter, Hello Operator, Faber Drive).
Since his win on The Next Star, he has been pursuing his solo endeavours, as well as dedicating his time as the frontman for teenage pop-punk band, More Than Us. MTU has performed in schools across Ontario, most notably headlining at Rogers Centre for the 2012 Spring Fling. As a solo artist, he is continually performing live, having recently shared the stage with Canadian pop stars such as Aleesia, Brian Melo, Danny Fernandes, as well as These Kids Wear Crowns and Faber Drive at The Next Star Finale. Complimenting his live presence, Diego continues to entertain his dedicated followers with viral videos and popular covers online, as he prepares for the next stage of his career.
Fueled by the excitement of his early successes and a heightened appreciation and passion for his art, he continues to hone his songwriting skills. In partnership with a team of proven and experienced collaborators that includes some of his biggest musical influences, Diego is now busy in the studio preparing his highly anticipated debut EP, dropping Summer 2013.
